TEETH COLLECTION + PLASMIC FORMATIONS / TO NIGHT GOLDEN CURLS
split 2008 tour 7" - $7
ESS015
This 7" was put together very quickly for their march 2008 tour, hence community college being mis-spelled on the back,
Community College label discriptions: TNGC - Really dark piece. Intense reverb heavy vocals, Distorted beats building into a wall. Helpless and scared, the shape of things to come.
TC&PF - Amazing track- the synth work by Plasmic Formations on this is phenomenal. Amazing Teeth Collection electro-acoustic work, a wonderful piece overall. Sounds huge and evil
ltd to 100, thick hand made paper front cover with cardstock back cover.

VESTIGIAL LIMB / FLETCHER PRATT
split 7" - $7
ESS014
Vestigial Limb is Ray Shinn of KY, and is also an epicene_ ESR main stay. Years ago Ray was in an obscure math rock band (think breadwinner), eventually Ray opted for the "pure self- indulgence" of harsh noise, and totaly fucked free jazz. The free jazz influence is evendent in his style of harshness, shards of blistering electroniics are splattered across your ears like shrapnel in little spastic spurst like that of trap kit pummel.
Fletcher Pratt is from Winnipeg, runs the excellent MIDORI tapes, and isinvolved in a hand full of projects around the Winnipeg scene. Fletcher's work is Musique concrete at it's finest. Mr. Pratt is by far one of the best tape collagist around at the moment.

BLUE SABBATH BLACK CHEER / PIG HEART TRANSPLANT
split 7" - $7
ESS013
BSBC is the duo of Wm. Rage (electric heavyland, enterruption, gnarled tapes, etc) and Stand Reed (broken penis orchestro, plethora, psychform records, etc) channeling the spirit of the horned one. With the usual blend of vocals, tapes, guitar, bass, and clatter, they are by far the best example of blackened noise.
PHT is Jon Kortland of Seattle powerviolence duo IRON LUNG, and a revolving door of comrades. This sounds like early swans covering throbbing gristle. Brutal slow motion noise doom complete with throat shredding vocals.

Iovae / 3 Legged Race
split 7" - $6
ESS011
Two of my favorite modern noise makers from the states have to be HAIR POLICE and IOVAE. This is very close to being a split from both.
IOVAE is Ron Orovitz also known as the D.J. on ART DAMAGE RADIO, a memeber of the no-wave nosie group DEATH BEAM, a noise weirdos WILD GUNMAN. For IOVAE's track we get slow churning crackle, pop and hiss from the "Grinder" (a series of ancient military oscillators) that builds into what sounds like the church bell tones of a satanic mass echoing through the devils canyon.
3 LEGGED RACE is Robert from HAIR POLICE and EYES AND ARMS OF SMOKE. For the Race side we get one ominous heavenly droning swelling tone which is given the extreme reverb treatment until it sounds like a white washed blissed out radiant hum.
The artwork was designed by Robert and is a must see. One sheet of lines with a transparency of lines. but when one is placed over the othere, you start to see a hidden image. Also just moving the transparency around on top of the other page makes alot of tripped out intersecting lines. like i said one you have to see, def one of the best looking, most intresting covers in EPICENE history.
Limited edition of 300 copies, split release with Mark of Black Tent's Gentian label.

Orthrelm
OV- 12" - $12
ESS009
Limited edition of 500 copies, 100 on green vinyl, for mailorder and the band only, first come first serve. Will ship before August 31. Here's a review from pitchforkmedia.com.
What will likely be reflected upon as one of the most important records of the decade, Orthrelm's "OV" is a single 45 minute composition for drums and guitar that spans over both sides of this limit testing LP. Formerly known for their short spastic bursts of frantically metallic and compositionally fragmented miniatures, "OV" has placed them on an almost different plane entirely. Though still quite frantic and feverish in their playing, with "OV," Mick Barr (best guitarist on the planet?) and Josh Blair (drummer extraordinaire) take each figure and repeat it to an almost unsustainable length, adding slight variations and nuances that will create a sense of almost euphoric meditation. Then the fluid in your skull suddenly shifts as Orthrelm tackle a new untimely riff. Refined and disciplined, "OV" sets an unimaginable parameter in technical composition. Featuring different art than the CD version released on Ipecac, we are very pleased to bring you this wax

Walter - Barr - Hillmer
s/t 10" - $12
ESS008
Weasel Walter (the flying luttenbachers, xbxrx, lake of dracula, hatewave, etc..)
Mick Barr (orthrelm, octic, ocrilm, quix*o*tic, crom-tech, etc)
Sam Hillmer (zs)
i almost feel nothing else needs to be said, but here goes anyway... 2 tracks recorded in 2004 by Colin Marston (behold... the arctopus, dysrhythmia, byla) at the PAINcave right after this trio's debut at the 2004 cmj fest in new york, and a 3rd track recorded in san fransico a year later. blistering, skonking, twisted free-jazz / modern composition by way of sinister metal band. one track written by walter, one by the trio, and one by hillmer. this could easily be a veriosn of the flying luttenbachers, although hillmer's track is a stand out and has an almost remix quality to it, even though it's not (think electro-acoustic, not techno remix). ltd to 300, never to be re-pressed on vinyl even again. white vinyl, amazing cover art by mick and weasel... looks like what you would expect... mick barr style drawing, weasel walter style color. art work will be up once we actually have them in stock.
foxy digitals review: Walter and company spit pure venom and blood from the white grooves of this brief free jazz offering from Epicene. While the 10” record usually would be unfathomably restrictive for most artists working the free circuits, here roughly ten-minute sides ensure maximum punch. Instead of the winding, confrontational passages often associated with the genre, this ensemble focuses their attention on complete cohesion from the outset. Actually, “focus” should be the keyword of this review. In fact, the three pieces that make up this mini album appear to be actual compositions and not just edited bits from mind-melting skronk sessions.
Most of you reading this know percussionist-composer-bandleader Weasel Walter, founder of legendary Chicago/Bay Area free unit, the Flying Luttenbachers. Or perhaps stints in XBXRX or Lake of Dracula brought him to you attention. Regardless, he’s a living luminary at-large on this trio date. Certainly it might be safe to assume that if you are still paying attention you know six-string slinger Mick Barr (Orthrelm, Octis), recent associate of the Luttenbacher troupe. Saxophonist Sam Hillmer (Zs) rounds out this ensemble on a pair of recordings from October 2004 (Brooklyn) and May 2005 (San Francisco).
Side A opens up with a 2004 studio recording of Walter’s own “Trajectories,” a stabbing slice of saxophone-guitar brutality that often recalls John Zorn’s Naked City project. A minimal theme eventually gives way to a bludgeoning attack of sludge-metal fusion, as Barr riffs and Hillmer squalls. The way in which Hillmer’s sax and Barr’s guitar blend into a singular force propels the music straight into your gut. Not only have they synchronized their lines but also their searing tones blend into a furious mammoth wail. Barr’s individual tone recalls 1980s Zappa, saturated mid-range rippling through the speakers, yet maintaining enough sonic clarity into order to actually distinguish notes. Closing out the side, “The Art of Collecting Royalties” from a 2005 San Francisco date, offers three minutes of subdued, searching group improv in a comparatively traditional jazz manner ending in a pulsating drum solo. On both of these tracks, the recording fidelity of Walter’s drumming stands outcrisply thudding in the center section.
From the same recording as “Trajectories,” the side-length Hillmer composition on the b-side, “The Art of Rolling,” trades jazz aesthetic for cubist electronics and a distinctly Euro improv palette. Interestingly enough, despite being from the same session, the band from the first cut remains unrecognizable throughout the nine-plus minutes of the piece. Walter even trades his kit for what could be any number of digital deviceslaptop, drum pads, sampler, who knows. Rhythm dominates this track (drummer bandleader, go figure), but in a clattery, industrial manner as a variety of patterns compete for the leadership position. Hillmer and Barr lay down an atonal cloud upon which Walter’s mechanized beats hammer. Following a pregnant silence approximately four or five minutes in, a remixed distillation of previous events further darkens the stripped factory, sending the rats scurrying and sawdust flying into the cigarette air.
All in all, those interested in modern free jazz (or on the other hand increasingly alienated by less traditional forms of contemporary improv) probably should consider adding this to their collection. In a world of disposable media, the actual investment in vinyl for a non-full-length release refreshes this critic. As trivial as it might be, the willingness to invest hundreds of dollars voices true support and acts as a mark of quality. Not to mention breaking that access barrier to brick-and-mortar record shops. Too bad this record came out back in 2006 or it would have been a shoe-in for my year-end list. Edition of 300. Super-heavy white vinyl. Thank you Epicene. Thank you WW, MB & SH. Now, do it again. 9/10 -- Brandon Miller (5 September, 2007)

Behold... the Arctopus
Nano-Nucleonic Cyborg Summoning- 12" - $10
ESS007
An otherworldly instrumental trio, Behold... the Arctopus play virtuosic prog-metal with hyper-realistic speed and dexterity. Drums, guitar and Warr guitar (a 12 string tap guitar that must be seen to be believed) come together to breath new life into a genre cluttered with uninspired Dillinger rips. Behold... the Arctopus could be the band to save metal for you.
"The instrumental trio comprised of guitar, drums and touch guitar (a 12 string instrument played primarily by tapping that covers the range of guitar and bass), plays intensely virtuosic and complex progressive metal with avant-garde leanings that completely avoids sounding dated or cliche. They combine the furious virtuosity of tech metal, the improvised soloing of jazz, and certain writing techniques of contemporary classical music to give their insanity a compositional cohesion rarely heard in rock music. Despite their technical nature, they always rock hard and in an engaging way that's as accessible to musicians and non-musicians alike. They are a true metal band that everyone can enjoy, not just the "kvlt" headbangers." - Alex Nagle
A one-sided vinyl 12" limited to 500 copies on white vinyl with a silkscreen on the blank b-side. CD available on Troubleman Unlimited.

Upsilon Acrux
Volucris Avis Dirae-Arum- 12" - $12
ESS006
Insanely complex tech prog. Otherwordly melodies combine with sharp stop on the dime memorizations pushed through a cannon of brutality. Calling the San Diego area home this five piece (two drummers, guitar, bass, and moog) have completely destroyed your formerly limited thoughts on "progressive" previous to Volucris Avis Dirae Arum, their fourth album. A joint release between Epicene and Rice Control (CD available on Planaria), this vinyl version is limited to 500 copies on clear vinyl, enclosed in transparent acetate covers and resealable slip cases

Time
of Orchids
Early
As Seen In Pace- CDep -$5
ESS005
Scary in the sense that music with such a pop sensibility has never sounded so abstract and "out". Time of Orchids follows up their two self-released full-lengths "Melonwhisper" and "Much Too Much Fun" with this 4 song, 40 minute plus EP on their first proper label, ours. Cleanly fucked guitar, bass, drums, and some truly bizarre sounding synth, Time of Orchids bounce on your trampoline with knives poking out from bottoms of their shoes. Early As Seen In Pace works as record that always seems to be off yet would feel on in any other band's hands, but would then feel somehow wrong if it were. Think Talking Heads, think Mr. Bungle, think that you've never heard anything else like ToO, and also think that New York City better stop spawning so many amazing bands flying below hipsterdom's radar or else Epicene's catalog will grow massive beyond our means |

Behold...
The Arctopus
Arctopocalypse Now... Warmageddon Later- 3" CD - $5
ESS004
This is the first release in our 3" Complexities Series, and fuck it all if this isn't one of the most brain damagedly complex recordings ever. Arctopus is the new definition of tech, go look it up buddy. A blender full of scrap metal swirled around in a whirlpool, then shaken up in a snowglobe. Totally insane structures, hyper-surreal speed and dexterity will have you tossing your Breadwinner and Dillinger records out the locomotive you should listen to this on. Featuring Colin Marston, ala Infidel? / Castro! on the twelve string tap guitar, the Arctopus have given Epicene a very special thing here, and an unebbing desire to maintain this level of quality for future Complexities recordings.

Carrion
The
Crime Of Idle Hands- full length CD - $10
ESS003
Brutal like the squirts. Washington D.C.'s Carrion carries a post-hardcore torch while wearing an Am Rep shirt with yellow underarms. The Crime Of Idle hands will most likely be reflected on as the bedsore on Epicene's side, as this is just straight ahead fucking heavy, that is if you consider Dazzling Killmen to be straight ahead. A masterpiece that surmises it's punk and metal roots and will become a classic in it's own in due time. This could be the crust kids raised on metal's version of South Of Heaven or perhaps My War, time will tell. Split release with McCarthyism.

Friendly
Bears / Infidel? Castro!
split- 12" - $8!
ESS002
A face off between two of New York City's finest, yet criminally unknown, groups of head rolling subway dementia. Friendly Bears take the long side with 4 songs of juttering, hypnotically repetitive obtuseness. Jarring yet unabrasive, and smoothed over totally by that cool and tax dollar collected trumpet playing by Mr. Tim Barnes, formerly of Candidria. A serious sweatshop workout by these up and comers and their debut release with hopefully much more to come.
Infidel go dark red and polarize your memories of th' Bears spider web sensibilities in a demonstrative, God-like way. Cut up harshness filled with more off-sampling than the last three Matmos albums. This side'll make your neighbors think your parents never treated your right. A remix and combination of both their past album "Case Studies In Bioentropy" and their forth coming full length "Bioentropic Damage Fractal." Musique Concrete meets abstract metal? This is the violence of hygiene.
